The Bankruptcy of Self-Sufficiency

The Bankruptcy of Self-Sufficiency

Today we are going to look at a message directed to those who had embraced the sin of self-sufficiency. It was a message that was written to a pastor and his people who were in the midst of one of the most seductive empires in the history of man.

Powerful Prayers From Weakness

Powerful Prayers From Weakness

Here’s what we have found in this community at Church of the Open Door. Not only is prayer the fundamental way that God enters into our weakness and demonstrates His power and strength, but He also wants to do a specific work that can only be accomplished as we pray together (2 Cor. 1, John 17). As we come to God in these prayers, He wants us to wait on Him. This process expands our hearts and enlarges our capacity to trust Him.

Make Disciples of All the Nations

Make Disciples of All the Nations

God’s call on Church of the Open Door for 104 years has been to take this Gospel of Grace to every tribe, language, people and nation. Our calling is to go and tell all the nations and religions of the world that Jesus is the only way to God. Jesus is the only one that can forgive sins. Jesus is the only one that can free from bondage.

Why Christmas? Part 2

Why Christmas? Part 2

According to Hebrews 2:5-10, Jesus came on Christmas to resurrect our glory and dignity. The rest of the chapter explains that He is not ashamed to call us His brother or sister and place us firmly in the family of God (2:11-13). Not only has He destroyed Satan’s exploitation of death (2:14-15), but He is our faithful and merciful High Priest that advocates for us (2:17-18).

Why Christmas? Part 1

Why Christmas? Part 1

The Book of Hebrews was written to Jewish Christians who were suffering because of their allegiance to Christ. Their overwhelming temptation was to return to Jewish worship – return to the temple, to the sacrifices, to Moses, to set aside Christ and go back to the Law. Because of this, you have the Book of Hebrews where the writer lays out one of the greatest theologies on Jesus in all of Scripture. The argument of Hebrews is – why go back to what is inferior? Jesus is greater than Moses, Jesus is greater than Joshua, Jesus is greater than the Law, and Jesus is greater than Aaron and Melchizedek. Jesus is greater than the angels.

Wise Words Part 2

Wise Words Part 2

We know nothing about God’s plan unless we understand that it is a plan of love. When we are filled with the transforming love of Christ, when our hearts have been smitten by the mystery of that love, when what daily fills us is deep gratitude for His sacrifice and transformation, then our words begin to be words of love, words of service, words of grace, words of encouragement, words of peace, and words that that build and not destroy.

Wise Words Part 1

Wise Words Part 1

In Proverbs Solomon says that death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit (18:21). Wisdom says that words are powerful because they penetrate the soul and last a lifetime. Our words bless or curse. They build up or they destroy. They encourage or discourage. They nourish or weaken. They heal or hurt.

Our Journey with Anger

Our Journey with Anger

Proverbs and anger. The teaching of Proverbs on anger is no different than any of the other topics – these teachings are God’s deep desires for us. One way to summarize Proverbs teaching on anger is: Avoid the destructive force of excess anger; pursue being slow to become angry. In Christ, you are absolutely more than your excessive responses or unhealthy repressed responses to injustices in our broken worlds. Being angry isn’t a sin! How we deal with it, where we let it go makes all the difference.

Our Song of Gratitude

Our Song of Gratitude

Grumbling, whining, and thanklessness are not ultimately the heart’s responses to circumstances, but to God. Whenever God doesn’t perform the way we think he should, we let Him know it. As long as he gives us blessing we will keep following Him, but the moment He doesn’t give us what we think we deserve we have no way forward because we believe He owes us.
