Dear Church of the Open Door Family, What happens when we trust in the Lord with all our hearts, and do not lean on our own understanding? We’ve caught a glimpse of what happens these past few months . . . Tecate. In July almost 40 kids and leaders went to Tecate, Mexico to proclaim the love of Jesus to children…
In this hostile and sinful world, every one of us has to make a choice of whose voice we are going to listen to. Solomon exhorts us to cling to our Creator and humbly trust and submit ourselves to Him and His plan for our lives.
Solomon says the purpose of Proverbs is wisdom, moral instruction, to discern wise counsel (vs. 2), and to develop skillful living in what is right, just and fair (vs. 3). The chief aim of the book is to enable us to look at life through God’s eyes. Through the power of the Holy Spirit we can trust His eternal, all-knowing point of view and live accordingly.
God wants to turn us from victims into victors, from people who abdicate responsibility into men and women who pursue character, integrity, and trustworthiness and press into difficult situations. It’s this character that God is forming in us that will allow us to fulfill who we are intended to be. It’s this character that will provide influence and allow us to teach truth and love others in a world that does neither. It’s through our new heart, new nature, the indwelling of the Holy Spirit and our cooperation with Him that our character will take shape.
Dear Church of the Open Door Family, Sometimes as I sit with my family at the dinner table and look at all their precious faces, I’m filled with anxiety. I wonder if Nancy and I are doing our part to tether our kids to the loving truth of God’s Word. Will my kids be happy? Happy is the man who…

In Psalm 22 David is picturing the cross of the Good Shepherd, and in Psalm 24 David is picturing the glory of the Good Shepherd and His strong and mighty intervention. Psalm 23 describes the time in-between. The time between the cross and the King of glory coming again. The time in-between that involves green pastures and also valleys of the shadow of death, comfort and fear, cups running over and enemies, goodness and mercy and dreams of dwelling in the house of the Lord.

God is a master of signage. Here is what Jesus said in Matthew 16:2, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be clear weather, because the sky is red.’ And in the morning, ‘There will be a storm today, because the sky is red and threatening.’” In English we say, “Red sky at night is a sailor’s delight; red sky at morning, good sailors take warning.” God puts up a brightly lit sign every morning and evening so we can prepare for the weather He is sending. He also lights up a sign for certain generations in world history.
