Why Acts?
In 2022 and 2023 we studied the Gospel of Luke, knowing we would eventually study the second volume that Luke wrote, which is the Book of Acts. We left off in Luke with Jesus right before His ascension, telling His disciples to be “witnesses” of His death and resurrection. Jesus was instructing the disciples to stay in Jerusalem in order to receive the promise of being clothed with power from on high (Luke 24:48-49).
So what’s going to happen to these disciples?
Will they receive the promise?
Will they be clothed with power from on high?
Will the religious leaders and/or Roman empire crush them?
Will they experience affliction and persecution and run and hide again?
We left you with these cliff-hanger questions in 2024 as we took the year after Luke to study the Book of Psalms.
Now as 2025 begins, we get to finish what we started in the Gospel of Luke and spend this year and next studying the Book of Acts.
Last year Psalms focused our prayers “inward” as we slowed down to lament, rest & find refuge in the presence of God. We learned to wait on His faithful promises and future vindication that would come with Messiah.
This year and next, the Book of Acts will take this spiritual foundation from Psalms and focus our prayers “outward.” It will teach us to trust the revealed Messiah and the promised Holy Spirit to bring the gospel to Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth.
What Acts proclaims is that Jesus is the Lord of all and sent to all, and that those He sends, He will empower. These messengers of new life proclaim this Gospel prayerfully, boldly and by the power of the Holy Spirit.
One of our 2025 Breakthrough Prayers was drawn from Acts: Father, move our hearts to invite others into prayerful worship.
As we study the Book of Acts as a church family, we are asking you to open yourself up to the Holy Spirit in such a way that He might use you to proclaim the love and grace of Jesus to those He has placed in and around your life.
We are praying that God would empower us as a church the way He empowered the early church by His Spirit, and give us boldness to invite others into prayerful worship.
