Christmas traditions have a way of grounding us—baking the same cookies every year, watching the classic movies, hanging familiar ornaments, or driving around to see lights. These simple moments slow us down and remind us what Christmas is really about.

For my family, one tradition rises to the top: our church’s Living Nativity. It has become something we look forward to every December. When my daughters were little, both of them had the chance to play Mary at different times. Seeing them standing in that manger scene, wrapped in simple fabric and cradling the baby Jesus, is a picture that will always stay with me.

There was something deeply moving about watching them step into that moment—a reminder of the miracle and humility of Christ’s birth.

And that’s the beauty of the Living Nativity. It’s more than an event. It’s a tradition that recenters us.

In the middle of a season that can easily become busy and overwhelming, the Living Nativity helps us refocus on the true miracle of Christmas . . . the birth of Jesus.

Each year, as families gather on the hillside, the familiar story unfolds in a way that feels fresh every time: shepherds listening in the quiet night, angels announcing good news, wise men traveling far, and live animals setting the scene. Scripture and carols fill the air, reminding us that the birth of Jesus wasn’t just a moment in history . . . it was the moment that changed everything.

And that’s why this tradition matters so much.

It calls us back —gently, beautifully—to what Christmas is actually about.

So, when you look at your December calendar, adding shopping, Christmas baking, and gift wrapping days to it, include the Living Nativity—December 12, 13 and 14. The shows are at 6:00pm, 6:30pm, 7:00pm and 7:30pm.

After watching one of the shows, everyone is invited into the worship center where there are cookies, cocoa, kids’ crafts and a great family photo spot.  It’s the perfect opportunity to linger a bit, let the children enjoy Christmas themed fun (and the best array of Christmas cookies ever!) and catch up with friends and family.

Our Living Nativity has become a yearly highlight not just for my family, but for so many others. A moment to breathe. A tradition that keeps Christ at the center. A reminder that the greatest gift ever given came wrapped not in shiny paper, but in swaddling clothes.

Dress warmly, gather your loved ones, and come experience the story that brings hope, peace, and joy to the world . . . what Christmas is really all about.
