On this day we celebrate the amazing privilege of living in a country that values the freedom and rights of its citizens.

I can’t help but think also of what Jesus says in John 8:36: So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

We were captives who Jesus set free, and it isn’t a symbolic emancipation – it is a real deliverance with great hope and privilege.  Jesus’ legitimate offer to all of humanity is that He can liberate slaves in any condition and turn them into emancipated sons and daughters of God the Father with full rights and privileges.

Let us celebrate all of the festivities of our freedoms today, and let us also rejoice that when the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed!
